Dr. Walter Brueggemann, considered the preeminent Hebrew Bible scholar of our day and an ordained United Church of Christ minister, will give a public lecture at Dauphin Way United Methodist Church at 5:30 PM on Sunday, Sept. 27. His address is entitled “Truth Speaks to Power: The Countercultural Nature of Scripture.”
Dr. Brueggemann earned degrees at Elmhurst College, Eden Theological Seminary, Union Theological Seminary and his Ph.D at St. Louis University. He was a Rockefeller Doctoral Fellow and has been recognized as a leading scholar with numerous honorary degrees from major colleges and universities. He has served as Professor of Old Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary and Eden Theological Seminary, and as Visiting Lecturer, Theology Faculty, Cambridge University.
Dr. Brueggeman’s research, writings, and lectures illuminate the stories of the Old Testament and their relevance to contemporary living. Some of his most acclaimed recent books include: Disruptive Grace; Reflections on God, Scripture and the Church; Sabbath As Resistance: Saying No to the Culture of Now; Reality, Grief, Hope: Three Urgent Prophetic Tasks; Ice Axes for Frozen Seas: A Biblical Theology of Provocation; and, Psalms: A Commentary.
